What is Cardano (ADA)?
Built for payments, smart contracts and decentralized applications, Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain whose native cryptocurrency is ADA. Engineering firm IOHK, since renamed IOG, began developing it in 2015 under Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson. Cardano's mainnet launched in September 2017, and smart contract support arrived in September 2021. Two other organizations, the Cardano Foundation and Emurgo, also contribute to development.
Cardano reaches consensus through Ouroboros, and blocks arrive roughly 20 seconds apart. ADA holders can delegate their stake to stake pools, and each pool is picked to produce blocks in proportion to its stake. The coin covers transaction costs, is paid out as staking rewards to delegators and pool operators, and carries voting power in on-chain governance, fully active since January 2025. Supply is limited to 45 billion ADA, with new coins released gradually from a reserve that funds rewards and the treasury. One lovelace, the smallest unit, equals a millionth of an ADA.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Cardano against USDT?
ADA has several roles on Cardano: it pays network fees, is used for staking and gives holders voting power in on-chain governance. Someone who holds ADA for those reasons can convert part of it into USDT, a stablecoin that aims to track the US dollar, and reverse the conversion later. Pricing ADA against USDT also creates a common reference point for comparing it with other assets quoted in the same stablecoin. Crypto markets have no closing bell, so ADA's price can change overnight and over weekends.
