What is XRP?
XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, an open-source network built for fast, low-cost payments. David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto developed the ledger, which began operating in June 2012. Ripple, a company founded in September 2012, is separate from both the asset and the ledger. The ledger's creators transferred 80 billion XRP to Ripple to build on the network.
The ledger uses neither mining nor staking. Under the XRP Ledger Consensus Protocol, independent validators settle on a fresh ledger version every few seconds. The cost of each transaction is paid in XRP and destroyed, so no one collects it. Each account must also keep a small XRP reserve. On the ledger's built-in exchange, XRP can serve as a bridge between other assets. The entire supply of 100 billion XRP was created at launch, and no more can be issued. In 2017, Ripple moved 55 billion of its XRP into escrow contracts that unlock up to 1 billion XRP each month.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade XRP against USDT?
The XRP/USDT pair expresses a payments-focused asset in a stablecoin unit, so its quote can be set directly against fiat amounts and other assets. A single conversion moves a balance from XRP into a stablecoin that aims to mirror the US dollar, or back again, without routing money through a bank. Crypto trading is not tied to banking hours, so the pair remains available on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, when bank transfers usually pause.
