What is Algorand (ALGO)?
Silvio Micali, a professor of computer science at MIT and a Turing Award winner, founded Algorand in 2017. The project's main network opened in June 2019 as a layer-1 chain aimed at payments and smart contracts, with low fees and fast finality as core goals. ALGO is the token native to that network.
Algorand reaches consensus through pure proof of stake. For every block, a verifiable random function picks the accounts that propose it and vote on it, and an account's odds of selection grow with its ALGO balance. Each block is final in under three seconds, and a fresh one arrives roughly every 2.8 seconds. ALGO is spent on transaction fees, which start at 0.001 ALGO, and gives holders a role in consensus. Since a January 2025 upgrade, eligible block proposers can also receive block rewards. The genesis block contained the full 10 billion ALGO, and supply is capped at that figure.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Algorand against USDT?
The ALGO/USDT pair prices Algorand's token against USDT, a stablecoin that aims to hold a value of one US dollar. Holders who rely on ALGO for network fees or consensus participation can move part of their balance into USDT, or back into ALGO, in a single conversion. Measuring ALGO against the same USDT benchmark used for other layer-1 tokens also simplifies side-by-side comparison. The pair is open at any hour, weekends and holidays included.
