What is Aptos (APT)?
APT is the native token of Aptos, a layer 1 blockchain built by Aptos Labs. The company was founded by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, who had worked on Meta's Diem blockchain project before starting it. Aptos is built on the Move programming language, which was originally designed for that project. The Aptos mainnet launched in October 2022.
Transaction fees on Aptos are paid in APT and then burned. Aptos is a proof-of-stake network. Validators lock up APT to take part in AptosBFT consensus and are rewarded for it, while holders who do not run a validator can delegate their tokens to one. Staked APT also gives its holder voting power in on-chain governance, where proposals cover protocol upgrades and network parameters. There were 1 billion APT when mainnet went live. Staking rewards are paid out in newly minted APT, so the total supply has risen since launch.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Aptos against USDT?
The APT/USDT pair prices the Aptos token against Tether, giving a dollar-based reference and turning a switch between the two into a single conversion. Some traders use it to add to or trim their APT holdings as their view of the Aptos ecosystem changes. Others hold USDT between trades without leaving the crypto market. Since fees on Aptos are paid in APT, active users of the network may also top up or reduce their APT balance through this pair. APT trades continuously, with no daily close.
