What is BNB?
BNB is the native coin of BNB Chain, a blockchain ecosystem that grew out of the Binance exchange. Binance created BNB and issued it in July 2017 after a token sale. It began as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and moved to Binance's own blockchain in April 2019. Once called Binance Coin, it now runs mainly on BNB Smart Chain, which launched as Binance Smart Chain in September 2020 and was renamed in February 2022.
BNB pays transaction fees on BNB Smart Chain and related networks such as opBNB. Holders can stake it with the validators that secure the chain under proof of staked authority, where stake decides which validators produce blocks. Staked BNB also carries governance voting rights. Supply started at 200 million BNB and shrinks through two burns: a quarterly Auto-Burn based on the BNB price and the number of blocks produced, and a real-time burn of part of each block's gas fees. The Auto-Burn aims to cut total supply to 100 million BNB.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade BNB against USDT?
BNB/USDT lets you move between BNB Chain's native coin and a dollar-denominated balance in one step. Quoting BNB in USDT shows its value in dollar terms, which makes it easier to track and compare with other assets. Some users hold BNB to pay network fees or use apps in the BNB Chain ecosystem, then convert back to USDT when they no longer want exposure to its price. The market runs around the clock, including weekends and public holidays.
