What is Dogecoin (DOGE)?
Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer released Dogecoin in December 2013 as a lighthearted take on the cryptocurrency boom. Both its name and its Shiba Inu logo were borrowed from the "doge" internet meme, which was popular at the time. It works as a peer-to-peer digital currency on its own public blockchain, which was built from code derived from Litecoin.
Miners secure the network through proof of work based on the Scrypt algorithm, producing a new block roughly once a minute. Dogecoin also supports merge mining with Litecoin, which lets the same mining effort protect both networks simultaneously. DOGE serves mainly as a currency for payments, donations and online tips. Its supply is uncapped: each block creates a flat 10,000 DOGE, which adds about 5 billion coins a year.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Dogecoin against USDT?
Dogecoin is used mostly for tips, donations and payments, and its price is driven largely by community interest, so it can swing quickly. Pricing DOGE against USDT, which aims to stay pegged to the US dollar, shows what a holding is worth in familiar dollar amounts. Someone who receives DOGE as a tip may convert it to USDT, then convert back when they want to spend or send DOGE again. The DOGE/USDT pair trades at any hour, every day of the year.
