What is Polkadot (DOT)?
Polkadot is a network designed to link many specialized blockchains so they can share security and pass data to one another, and DOT is its native token. Gavin Wood, a co-founder of Ethereum, set out the design in a 2016 white paper and began the project alongside Robert Habermeier and Peter Czaban. With the Web3 Foundation leading the launch and Parity Technologies writing much of the core software, Polkadot's mainnet started in May 2020.
At the center sits the relay chain, which provides shared security, while connected chains called parachains run their own applications. Validators are chosen through nominated proof of stake: DOT holders lock tokens to back validators and may receive staking rewards. The token also covers transaction fees, carries voting power in on-chain governance and buys coretime, the processing time parachains use on the relay chain. A governance vote in September 2025 set a ceiling of 2.1 billion DOT on total supply, and issuance steps down every two years starting in March 2026.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Polkadot against USDT?
Polkadot gives DOT several jobs: backing validators through staking, paying transaction fees, buying coretime and casting votes in OpenGov. A user who needs DOT for one of these tasks can get it with USDT, and one who no longer needs it can convert back to a balance designed to track the US dollar. The DOT/USDT rate also gives a dollar reference for the token at any hour of any day.
