What is Flare (FLR)?
Flare is a layer-1 blockchain built around data. Its smart contracts can read information from other blockchains and from the internet. Hugo Philion co-founded the project, and its mainnet genesis took place in July 2022. FLR, the network's own token, first reached the public in January 2023 through an airdrop to wallets that had held XRP at a December 2020 snapshot.
Flare runs smart contracts written for the Ethereum Virtual Machine and pairs Snowman++, a consensus protocol adapted from Avalanche, with proof of stake for security. Its validators double as data providers for two native protocols. The Flare Time Series Oracle publishes price feeds, while the Flare Data Connector imports verified data from other chains and web sources. Every transaction fee is paid in FLR and burned. The token can also be staked, delegated to data providers or used to vote in governance. At genesis, 100 billion FLR were created. Supply has no cap, and annual inflation keeps adding new tokens.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Flare against USDT?
On Flare, FLR covers network fees and is the asset committed to staking and to governance votes. Users of applications built on the network, including FAssets, the system that brings XRP into DeFi, may need to acquire or release FLR. Pairing FLR with USDT, a token whose value is designed to follow the US dollar, prices it in a familiar unit and gives holders a way to switch between the two. Crypto markets have no closing bell, so FLR keeps changing hands on Saturdays and Sundays.
