What is Litecoin (LTC)?
Litecoin dates back to October 2011, when former Google engineer Charlie Lee published its code and the network went live. Lee started from Bitcoin's source code and modified it to create a quicker, lighter currency, which makes Litecoin one of the oldest Bitcoin forks. Its ledger is a separate public blockchain, and no central authority directs it.
Blocks are produced by proof-of-work miners about every 2.5 minutes. Instead of Bitcoin's SHA-256, Litecoin relies on the Scrypt hashing algorithm. People use LTC to send payments and to settle network fees. Each new block pays its miner a reward in newly issued LTC. That reward is cut in half every 840,000 blocks, about once every four years, and the protocol caps total supply at 84 million LTC. MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB), an optional feature active since May 2022, allows transfers that keep the amount private. The smallest unit, the litoshi, equals 0.00000001 LTC.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Litecoin against USDT?
Litecoin was built for fast, inexpensive transfers, and LTC/USDT links that payment role to a dollar-referenced balance. Someone paid in LTC can switch the coins into USDT, a stablecoin that aims to hold its value in line with the US dollar, then convert back to LTC when it is time to send money again. Quoted this way, Litecoin's price reads as a dollar figure. Crypto markets have no closing time, so the pair can also be converted on Saturdays and Sundays.
