What is Sui (SUI)?
Sui is a layer-1 blockchain built for low-latency transactions and for handling digital assets. It comes from Mysten Labs, a company founded by former Meta engineers. Before Mysten, they worked at Novi, Meta's crypto unit, on the Diem blockchain and the Move programming language. Sui's mainnet launched in May 2023, with SUI as its native token.
Rather than organizing storage around accounts, Sui stores data as separate objects. This lets transactions that do not depend on each other run in parallel. Developers write smart contracts in Move. Delegated proof of stake secures the network: SUI holders stake with validators, who process transactions and earn rewards each epoch. SUI is spent as gas for computation and for on-chain storage, and it is designed to have a role in governance, including votes on protocol upgrades. Total supply is capped at 10 billion SUI, and tokens reach circulation over time under an unlock schedule. One SUI equals one billion MIST, the smallest unit.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Sui against USDT?
On Sui, gas for computation and storage is paid in SUI, and staking with validators also uses the token. The SUI/USDT pair links this network token to USDT, a stablecoin that aims to hold a value of one US dollar. Someone who wants to hold the token can convert USDT into SUI. A holder who wants less exposure to SUI's price movements can convert in the other direction. The pair trades overnight and through weekends, since crypto markets do not close.
