What is Stellar (XLM)?
Stellar is an open-source blockchain network for sending money and other assets, built to keep transfers quick and inexpensive. Its native token is the lumen, known by the ticker XLM. Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim founded Stellar, and the network launched in July 2014. A nonprofit, the Stellar Development Foundation, supports its development. Soroban, Stellar's smart contract platform, has been live since February 2024.
Stellar reaches agreement without miners or stakers. Under the Stellar Consensus Protocol, each validator picks a group of nodes it trusts, and the ledger advances once they agree. Lumens pay the fees that deter spam, cover the minimum balance each account must hold, and can act as an intermediate asset when one currency is exchanged for another. Supply started at 100 billion lumens and grew through annual inflation until a validator vote ended it in October 2019. In November 2019, the foundation burned about 55 billion lumens, leaving roughly 50 billion in total. No new lumens are issued.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Stellar against USDT?
Using Stellar means holding some lumens, because network fees are paid in XLM and each account needs a minimum lumen balance. The XLM/USDT pair lets users top up or trim that balance by converting against USDT, a stablecoin that aims to track the US dollar. Pricing lumens in USDT also makes their value easy to compare with dollar amounts. Crypto markets have no closing bell, so the conversion does not depend on banking hours.
Cryptocurrency prices are highly volatile and you can lose some or all of the money you convert. The information on this page is general market information, not investment advice, and past price movements are not a reliable indicator of future results. Read our
