What is Axie Infinity (AXS)?
Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) serves as the governance token for Axie Infinity, a blockchain game where players collect, breed and battle digital creatures known as Axies. Sky Mavis, the studio behind the game, first released it in 2018. The token arrived later, in November 2020, as an ERC-20 asset on Ethereum. An April 2021 upgrade gave AXS a new contract compatible with Ronin, the gaming blockchain Sky Mavis built for Axie Infinity, and the token now circulates on both networks.
Holders who stake AXS receive rewards, and staking also gives them voting power on governance proposals for the Axie ecosystem. Players can earn the token, too, by playing games within that ecosystem. On the supply side, the whitepaper sets a hard cap of 270 million AXS. That total is divided among play-and-earn rewards, staking rewards, an ecosystem fund, Sky Mavis, advisors and token sales, with the allocations set to unlock over 65 months starting from the 2020 public sale.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Axie Infinity against USDT?
The AXS/USDT pair can work in two directions. Players who receive AXS for playing in the Axie ecosystem may convert those rewards into USDT, which is designed to hold a value of one US dollar. Anyone who wants AXS for Axie governance can go the other way, from USDT to AXS. Because the price of AXS can change quickly, a USDT quote gives a dollar yardstick at any hour, since crypto markets have no closing bell.
