What is USDC?
USDC is a US dollar stablecoin issued by Circle, a US financial technology company. It launched in September 2018 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and was first governed by Centre, a consortium Circle formed with Coinbase. Centre was closed in August 2023, giving Circle full control of USDC's governance. USDC is now issued natively on many blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana, Base and Stellar.
USDC is designed to keep a value of one US dollar. Approved business customers mint new tokens by depositing dollars with Circle and can redeem tokens for dollars one to one, after which those tokens are burned. Supply therefore has no fixed cap and follows demand. Circle reports that most reserves sit in the Circle Reserve Fund, a government money market fund holding short-dated US Treasuries, Treasury repurchase agreements and cash, with the rest in bank deposits. A Big Four accounting firm provides monthly assurance on the reserves. USDC is used for trading, payments and settlement around the clock.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade USDC against USDT?
USDC/USDT pairs two dollar stablecoins from different issuers. Both are designed to track the US dollar, so the rate between them is intended to stay close to one, although it can move with supply, demand and market events. Traders convert between them to hold balances with more than one issuer, to use the stablecoin a particular wallet, exchange or application accepts, or to settle with a counterparty that uses USDC. Either way, the balance stays in dollar terms.
