What is Tether Gold (XAUT)?
Tether Gold (XAUT), also written XAU₮, is a digital token designed to represent ownership of physical gold. It is issued by TG Commodities, part of the Tether group behind the USDT stablecoin. Tether Gold launched in January 2020 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and a TRC-20 token on Tron. It has since been added to other networks.
Each token is designed to correspond to one fine troy ounce of gold on a London Good Delivery bar, which the issuer reports holding in vaults in Switzerland. Verified holders who meet a minimum amount can redeem tokens for physical gold, subject to fees and delivery terms. Each token can be divided to six decimal places. There is no maximum supply. Since each token is designed to be backed by one ounce, the number in circulation is meant to equal the ounces the issuer reports holding.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Tether Gold against USDT?
XAUT/USDT lets you move between a gold-linked token and a dollar stablecoin in one step. Each XAUT is designed to represent one fine troy ounce of gold, so the pair shows a gold price in dollar terms. The token's market price can still differ from the spot price of gold. Crypto markets run around the clock, so the pair can be traded on weekends, when most traditional gold markets are closed.
