What is Arbitrum (ARB)?
Arbitrum is a family of Ethereum layer 2 networks built to make transactions quicker and less expensive. Offchain Labs developed the technology, and its main chain, Arbitrum One, began running in 2021. The Arbitrum Foundation operates that chain. ARB arrived in March 2023 as an ERC-20 token on Arbitrum One. Network users and DAOs building on Arbitrum received a portion of the initial supply through an airdrop.
Arbitrum One works as an optimistic rollup. Transactions are executed away from Ethereum's main chain, then compressed and posted to Ethereum in batches. If a posted result is wrong, it can be disputed on Ethereum with a fraud proof. Gas is paid in ETH rather than ARB. ARB serves as the voting token of the Arbitrum DAO: holders vote on chain upgrades and treasury spending, directly or through a delegate, and they elect the Security Council. Supply began at 10 billion ARB, and the DAO may vote to issue more, up to 2% of total supply annually.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Arbitrum against USDT?
Since ARB is not spent on network fees, holders keep it for other reasons. Some want a say in Arbitrum DAO decisions, from chain upgrades and treasury use to Security Council elections. Others treat ARB as a position linked to the wider Arbitrum ecosystem. The ARB/USDT pair puts a USDT value on either kind of holding and lets holders convert between ARB and USDT on any day of the week.
