What is Mantle (MNT)?
Mantle Network is a layer-2 chain that sits on top of Ethereum, and MNT is the token behind it. The project traces its roots to BitDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization. In May 2023, BitDAO token holders voted to consolidate under the Mantle brand. Two steps followed in July 2023: the Mantle mainnet launched, and BIT holders started swapping their tokens for MNT at a one-for-one rate.
To reduce costs, Mantle processes transactions away from Ethereum's main chain and then settles them back on it. It began as an optimistic rollup and adopted zero-knowledge validity proofs in 2025. Gas on Mantle is charged in MNT instead of ETH. MNT also carries voting power in governance, including decisions on how the community treasury is spent. On Ethereum, MNT follows the ERC-20 standard. Its total supply stands at about 6.22 billion, but that figure is not permanently fixed, because the contract permits one capped mint of new MNT per year at most.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Mantle against USDT?
MNT has two jobs on Mantle Network: gas payment and governance voting. People who send transactions on Mantle or take part in its votes may need to build up or trim their MNT from time to time, and the MNT/USDT pair handles either direction in a single conversion. USDT is a stablecoin that aims to hold a value of one US dollar, so funds can sit in it between MNT trades.
