What is Pepe (PEPE)?
Named after Pepe the Frog, the internet character created by artist Matt Furie, PEPE is a meme coin that appeared on Ethereum in April 2023. There was no presale and no formal team behind the launch, and its creators have stayed anonymous. According to the project, it has no association with Furie or with the original character.
PEPE is an ERC-20 token. It can be stored in wallets that support Ethereum and trades on decentralized as well as centralized exchanges. The token has no built-in utility, and the project's own website says it has no intrinsic value and carries no expectation of financial return. Its price moves mainly with community interest. All 420.69 trillion tokens were minted at launch, and transfers are not subject to any buy or sell tax. In October 2023, a one-time burn sent 6.9 trillion PEPE to an address that no one controls, taking those tokens permanently out of circulation.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Pepe against USDT?
PEPE carries no built-in utility, so its price rests largely on community interest and can swing sharply when sentiment turns. Pairing it with USDT, which is designed to track the US dollar, expresses a PEPE balance as a dollar amount at the current rate. Holders can convert PEPE into USDT, or switch from USDT back into PEPE, without passing through a fiat currency. Trading in the pair does not pause overnight or on weekends.
