What is Convex Finance (CVX)?
Convex Finance is a decentralized finance protocol layered on Curve Finance, a decentralized exchange. A pseudonymous group of developers launched it on Ethereum in May 2021. Through Convex, people who supply liquidity to Curve can collect trading fees and boosted CRV rewards without locking any CRV of their own. CVX, the protocol's ERC-20 token, plays two roles: it is paid out as a reward and used for governance.
Liquidity providers deposit their Curve liquidity tokens with Convex, which applies its pooled boost to the CRV those deposits earn. New CVX is minted in proportion to the CRV claimed through Convex, though fewer CVX are issued per CRV as total issuance grows. Supply cannot exceed 100 million CVX, and half is reserved for rewards to Curve liquidity providers. Locking CVX for 16 weeks or more turns it into vote-locked CVX (vlCVX), which earns a share of protocol fees and carries votes on Convex proposals and on where token emissions are directed on platforms Convex boosts.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Convex Finance against USDT?
Liquidity providers on Convex receive newly minted CVX each time they claim CRV. Converting that CVX into USDT, a stablecoin that aims to hold a one-dollar value, leaves them with a USDT balance instead of a CVX one. Others can go the opposite way, using USDT to acquire CVX for the say that vote-locked CVX gives over how Convex votes on Curve. Crypto markets also keep trading through weekends.
