What is Ondo (ONDO)?
Ondo Finance, a company founded in 2021, brings traditional financial assets such as US Treasuries onto public blockchains in tokenized form. It introduced ONDO in April 2022 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, to serve as the governance token of the Ondo DAO. Transfers of ONDO were restricted at first. A vote by the Ondo DAO removed those limits, and the token became freely transferable in January 2024.
Governance is the token's main function. ONDO holders can vote on Ondo DAO proposals, such as changes to economic parameters and smart contract upgrades, or delegate that voting power to another wallet. The DAO's remit also covers Flux Finance, a decentralized lending protocol. The token is separate from Ondo Finance's tokenized products, among them USDY and OUSG. Supply was set at 10 billion ONDO at the outset, and the Ondo Foundation's token documentation says no inflation is scheduled or planned. Allocations for the team and investors were placed under multi-year lock-up and release schedules.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Ondo against USDT?
ONDO lets its holders vote in the Ondo DAO, which oversees Flux Finance and is part of the wider Ondo Finance ecosystem centered on tokenized assets such as US Treasuries. The ONDO/USDT pair prices this governance token against USDT, a stablecoin that aims to hold a value of one US dollar. A holder who wants less exposure to the Ondo ecosystem can convert ONDO into USDT without moving funds out of crypto, and converting back restores that exposure.
