What is Sky (SKY)?
The Sky Protocol, previously called MakerDAO, is a decentralized finance system that issues two stablecoins, USDS and DAI. SKY is the token used to govern it. The token went live on Ethereum in September 2024 as an upgrade of MKR, the protocol's earlier governance token, with a ratio of 24,000 SKY for each MKR. Since May 2025, SKY has been the protocol's sole governance token, and conversion between the two has worked in one direction only, MKR into SKY.
Decisions about the protocol and its parameters are made by SKY holders, who vote themselves or hand their votes to delegates. Through the Staking Engine, a holder can lock SKY to receive rewards, pass the locked tokens' voting power to a delegate and borrow USDS against them. SKY has no fixed supply. Governance sets the schedule for new SKY paid out as staking rewards, and the protocol has also spent USDS buying SKY back on the open market, so the amount in circulation does not stay constant.
What is Tether (USDT)?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of 1 US dollar. It launched in 2014 and is issued on several blockchains, including Ethereum and Tron. Because its price is meant to stay close to 1 USD, traders use USDT to price other crypto assets and to keep a dollar-denominated balance without leaving the crypto market.
Why trade Sky against USDT?
The SKY/USDT pair puts a dollar figure on the Sky Protocol's governance token. A holder can step out of SKY into USDT, which is designed to hold a value close to one US dollar, and reverse the trade later, for instance after a governance vote on staking reward schedules or USDS buybacks, or when conditions across decentralized finance shift. The crypto market has no closing bell, so the pair can be converted at any hour of any day.
